Kayla’s niche is providing supportive, compassionate care to teens and young adults.
Kayla Sheeran is a Licensed Psychological Associate who serves as a therapist with NextStep. She has experience providing outpatient evaluations and treatment in a variety of settings, working with children, adolescents, and young adult populations. Kayla graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Asbury University. She then earned a Master of Education in Counseling Psychology at the University of Louisville.
For clients who desire to incorporate Christian faith into their therapy work, Kayla enjoys providing Christian-based counseling. She was raised in a nondenominational church and is actively involved throughout the week. Kayla also serves on her church’s missionary care committee and offers counseling through an organization that serves the mental health needs of overseas missionaries. Through these roles, she has had the opportunity to travel internationally on multiple trips to provide mental health care and emotional support to families serving on the mission field. Working with missionary kids or third culture kids is one of her passions and areas of expertise.
Kayla uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, trauma-focused approaches, and play therapy techniques to help children, adolescents, and young adults develop tools to address ADHD, anger management, anxiety, ASD, boundary setting, depression, emotion regulation, grief, low self-esteem, identity issues, interpersonal conflict, OCD, PTSD, relationship issues, shame, spirituality, stress, suicidal ideation, and trauma.
In addition to individual and family sessions, Kayla administers ADHD assessments with teenagers and adults and full-psychological evaluations with children ages 6-16 to test for ADHD and Learning Disorders and to determine their potential needs.
Kayla’s journey through her own work of healing and growth shapes how she seeks to walk alongside others in their unique stories and struggles. As Kayla desires to cultivate a safe, compassionate space for clients, she uses evidence-based psychological treatment and purposeful care with the goal of helping clients and families find hope, peace, and freedom.
Kayla grew up doing competitive gymnastics and ran cross country in college. She has a twin sister, a younger sister, and one niece. In her free time, Kayla enjoys traveling, running, being outdoors, serving at her church, and spending time with family and friends.
