A Happier You Starts with Self-Care
When you think about self-care, what comes to mind? Is it something as simple as applying a charcoal face mask or brushing your teeth twice a day? Or, do you imagine a luxurious day trip to the spa with a hot stone massage and pedicure?
While a spa trip sounds oh-so-relaxing, self-care is so much more than pedicures and massages. Some say that self-care is a “form of parenting yourself when it comes to your own well-being.” So what is self-care? It can include using a day planner to follow a routine, making and attending doctor and/or therapist appointments, creating a nutritious meal plan to nourish your body, and developing an organizational system (and then implementing it) is the type of self-care an adult who has ADHD needs.
“Self-care is essential,” says Pam Valdes, M.A. “Self-care goes a long way in minimizing symptoms of ADHD and putting you in the driver’s seat of your life.”
Certified health coach and ADHD coach Pam Valdes tells us that self-care should be a balance among three different areas:
- Exercise
- Sleep
- Nutrition
Developing healthy self-care practices are part of the holistic and comprehensive management of ADHD. Sometimes referred to as “coping skills,” self-care skills are the structures that allow you to meet daily life demands and remain in a positive mindset. Self-care is an umbrella term for the wide variety of activities that help to support your overall health, prevent disease, reduce the risk of illness, and help to restore your mental and physical health.
