Why Some Kids Give Up Easily—and How to Help
Hi, I’m Dr. Kristi Briscoe.
ADHD kids often give up not because they’re lazy—but because past failures have taught them to expect frustration. It’s not defiance—it’s discouragement.
Here’s how to help them persist:
- Shrink the challenge — “Let’s just try 2 problems, then check in.”
- Name their effort — “I know this is tough, but you’re sticking with it.”
- Remind them of past wins — “You struggled with reading once—and now look at you!”
A child who believes effort leads to progress is more willing to try again.
